Sharjah Champions Trophy, 1988-89.

West Indies, despite losing to India and Pakistan in their first two matches of the triangular tournament, won their third trophy in three visits to Sharjah. The playing conditions gave Pakistan, the winners of the round robin, a free passage to the final, whereas the second and third teams in the table had to play a semi-final, which West Indies won. Such a system was open to criticism, which it duly received when West Indies walked off with the Sharjah Champions Trophy and $US30,000 (£17,250) prizemoney. Pakistan, the runners-up, received $US20,000 (£11,500) and India $US15,000 (£8,625). Gordon Greenidge, who took over the captaincy of West Indies when Vivian Richards sprained an ankle before the opening match, was named Man of the Tournament. The presence of West Indies, along with the two home countries, India and Pakistan, guaranteed large crowds, and approximately 20,000 attended the match between India and Pakistan, and the final.

The major beneficiaries of the Cricketers' Benefit Fund at this tournament were Mohsin Khan of Pakistan and Ravi Shastri of India, each of whom received $US50,000 (£28,750). The minor beneficiaries were Munir Malik (Pakistan) and Bhagwat Chandrasekhar (India), who received $US15,000 (£8,625) each.
