First Test Match

South Africa v Australia 1902-03

In this the opening fixture of the brief tour, the Australians were at a disadvantage as they had had to journey on at once to Johannesburg and play with little or no preliminary practice. Under the circumstances it was not surprising that their bowling suffered. However they gave a splendid display of batting after following on, and had not much the worst of the position when the game was given up. Hill's innings of 142 was marred by very few mistakes.
