With England's heavy victory Down Under in 1928-29 fresh in the mind, the editorial was determinedly upbeat, although the decision to award Test matches to West Indies was criticised as being "too premature". The concerns about the imbalance between bat and ball - some pitches, such as the one at The Oval, were batsmen's paradises - raged on, as they would for the next decade. The solutions varied, from changing the LBW law, making the wickets bigger, and banning the use of marl and liquid manure in pitch-preparation.
