England's disappointment of losing a series (at home to Australia) they were expected to win permeated through this volume. Two of the touring side - the veteran Clarrie Grimmett and the "extraordinary young cricketer" Don Bradman - were shoo-ins as Cricketers of the Year. Wretched weather and batsman-friendly pitches also attracted some criticism. The editor also praised the ending of the "relatively recent" habit of players appealing against the light, and welcomed new moves to leave the matter entirely in the hands of the umpires. Elsewhere, John Wisden & Co.'s extensive ball-manufacturing business was hit by a three-month strike. The unrest ended in March 1931, and the workers returned to duty with a 10% pay cut for their pains.
