The Almanack was late to the bookstands, cost more, and again had limitations of its size. Anyone would have thought there was a war on. Wartime cricket did indeed occupy much of a slimline Almanack ("Lord's," the editor observed, "provided a farrago of cricket which varied pleasingly from the first-class to that in which the players were remarkable for their enthusiasm rather than their ability") with school cricket making up the remainder of the reports: at Dulwich, Trevor Bailey took 66 wickets at 6.16 and scored 635 runs at 52.91. In Australia, one match of the Inter-State Patriotic Competition took place before the feared Japanese invasion caused the tournament to be abandoned. Wally Hammond made a hundred in Egypt, and closer to home the former England cricketer-footballer Andy Ducat collapsed and died while batting for Surrey Home Guard against Sussex Home Guard at Lord's.
