1982

"More, perhaps, than any of its predecessors, this 119th edition ... reflects the extent to which cricket has become embroiled in politics." That was the editor's opening line in the 1982 edition, and elsewhere Walter Hadlee, the former New Zealand captain, talked about the effects of apartheid on the cricket world. Elsewhere, Mike Brearley gave "some thoughts on modern captaincy", and there is a tribute to Ken Barrington, who died suddenly during England's tour of West Indies. The editor also praised Christine Forrest, a member of his editorial team, "who must be the only member of her sex capable of taking 200 words out of an overlong match report without upsetting its balance".
