Shivnarine Chanderpaul will battle through the discomfort after Chris Gayle promised his trio of injured senior players would face Australia in the second ODI at Grenada on Friday. Chanderpaul missed the opening match on Tuesday, which West Indies lost by 84 runs, while Gayle and Ramnaresh Sarwan turned out despite groin complaints.
With West Indies desperate for victory to avoid a 2-0 deficit, Gayle confirmed Chanderpaul's calf injury had healed enough for him to play. Chanderpaul was immoveable during the Test series, when he scored 442 runs in the three games, and his inclusion will be a boost for the hosts.
"They will play in this game, everybody is back," Gayle said. "The majority of the senior players are carrying injuries, not everybody is 100% at this time."
Gayle's issue is a long-standing one, but he appeared in the third Test and the opening one-day game. He picked up 20 as West Indies fell for 189 and captured 1 for 55. "I'm feeling good," he said. "The injury is getting better, I gave you guys ten overs on the trot, I'm trying to play my part in the team."
The West Indies felt they bowled badly in the first contest and they will try to take advantage of what Ricky Ponting has called a subcontinent-style surface in Grenada. "Obviously we want to square the series and try and bounce back as quickly as possible," Gayle said. "We don't want them to get away to 2-0."
