Wins for Trinidad and Argentina in Americas tournament

Trinidad and Tobago's women beat hosts Canada by seven wickets on the opening day of the ICC Americas Regional tournament on Monday. Bermuda marched to an expected victory over Argentina by 143 runs. However, Argentina did well in making 132 in their first overseas trip. For some players it was a rare appearance on a grass wicket.

The aim of the tournament, and the warm-up sessions organised by the ICC, is to foster the development of the game on a more global basis. The hope is that players and teams progress as this week unfolds.

Canada's progress against Trinidad was steady rather than spectacular, and the coaches hope to see players in future matches keeping the scoreboard moving by scoring the vital 1s and 2s. Canada reached 165 for 7 wickets in 40 overs, including to two innings of 34 runs, by top-order batsman Kim Coulter and Jeanna White later on.

Runs flowed for Trinidad after the loss of an early wicket. Amanda Cudjoe was the main destroyer, although several wides aided the visitors' cause. Key breakthroughs were not achieved, and the later bowlers were not able to stem the tide.

The Canadian side, led by 55-year-old Janet John-Dorie, is a mix of players from British Columbia and Ontario, with Tony Cordle, a highly experienced player with Glamorgan, acting as coach.

For Bermuda, runs flowed from the opening overs as opening bats Linda Mienzer (30) and Wendy Woodley (23). Reuna Richardson played the dominant innings of the game falling four short of a century. Catalina Grenoli took a creditable 3 for 40 runs in 8 overs for Argentina.

Terry Lynn Paynter then made early inroads into Argentina en-route to a final 5 for 27. Delfina Canton top-scored with 36 and Georgina Retamales added 23.

There are further round-robin games on Tuesday and Thursday (10.30 am starts). Trinidad plays a select Americas Development XI on Friday and remaining players play as Rest of Americas 'A' v B'.

Thursday's Canada-Bermuda game is pivotal for the hosts. Bermuda won a series 2-1 in Victoria last September to reach the next qualifying stage for the Women's World Cup in 2009.
