Francis Bohlen was one of the best-known American cricketers during the game's heyday there. He came to England with Gentlemen of Philadelphia teams in 1897, 1903 and 1908, and on other occasions when in England he played for MCC, London County and Free Foresters. He was renowned for his driving and general front-foot play. When the 1893 Australians visited Philadelphia on the way home from England, Bohlen scored 118, 33 and 54 not out; two years later he made 115, and with GS Patterson put on 200 for the first wicket against Frank Mitchell's University team. He seldom showed his best form for the Philadelphians in England, the best of his trips coming in 1903 when he averaged 27.69. He turned out ten times for USA in their traditional matches against Canada.
