Udana is a talented left-arm fast-bowling allrounder, whose variety and changes of pace have seen him appear sporadically for Sri Lanka's T20 side. Capable of moving the ball off the seam, Udana is possessed of a number of slower balls, including one out of the back of his hand that has brought him some success at the top level. He was fast-tracked into the Sri Lanka squad for the 2009 World T20 in England and played a role in Sri Lanka's progress to the final in that tournament. However, he did not play the 2010 World T20, and had largely been ignored by the national selectors until early 2017.

While still a schoolboy, at DS Senanayake College, he joined Nondescripts CC, but even before he could represent them in a domestic match he was selected to play for Sri Lanka Under-20 Schools side in the ongoing U-23 Division I youth tournament. He was selected to tour South Africa with the Sri Lanka A team in August 2008 without having played a single first-class match, and was the leading wicket-taker in the Inter-Provincial T20 tournament in 2008-09, helping Wayamba to the title and a berth in the Champions Twenty20 League.
