Scorecard
Zander de Bruyn scored an unbeaten century as Surrey had the best of the first day of the County Championship Division Two match against Glamorgan in Cardiff. Tom Maynard, who moved from the Swalec Stadium to the Oval in December, scored 60 not out against his former county as Surrey finished day one on 286 for 4.
Maynard and South African De Bruyn will resume an unbeaten fifth-wicket partnership of 122 tomorrow, after teaming up on 164 for. Glamorgan gave former Surrey batsman Stewart Walters his debut, with Ben Wright injured, while Robert Croft made his 350th Championship appearance.
After Surrey won the toss, openers Gary Wilson and Michael Brown came through the opening 17 overs of seam on a slow pitch, although runs were hard to come by with James Harris' opening five overs yielding for just five runs for the batsmen.
But spin got the breakthrough with slow left-armer Dean Cosker having Wilson caught at midwicket by Graham Wagg via a leading edge for 21. Wagg then got a delivery to bounce short of a length to Brown, who gave an easy catch to Will Bragg at second slip via the shoulder of the bat and departed for 23.
After Surrey reached 64 for 2 at lunch Cosker failed to hang on to a difficult chance to dismiss De Bruyn in the gully off Harris - when the batsman had made just 11. Then Steven Davies, on 23, was dropped by Gareth Rees at short leg from the first ball of a new spell from Croft.
But Davies was run out by Walters at cover for 45, after De Bruyn called him for a quick single which was not there. Michael Powell dropped De Bruyn on 40 at backward point off Cosker but the South African went on to bring up his half-century in 113 balls, with six fours and a six over long-on.
Visiting skipper Rory Hamilton-Brown was caught by Glamorgan captain Alviro Petersen at slip off Cosker for 2, which brought Maynard to the middle just before tea. And after getting off the mark to his ninth delivery, Maynard gave De Bruyn fair support as the pair took Surrey past the 200 mark.
Glamorgan took the second new ball but Wagg found himself despatched for six over point and four through midwicket by De Bruyn from consecutive balls as the 35-year-old moved into the 90s. A straight drive off Harris brought up his 100 from 196 balls with 14 fours and two sixes.
Maynard, who was caught from a no-ball on 36, soon followed him to his first 50 for Surrey from 88 balls, hitting five fours and a six in that effort.
