A century from
Morne van Wyk helped Dolphins chase a revised target of 301 within 42 overs against Titans, giving them a five-wicket victory (Duckworth-Lewis method) in the opening game of the Momentum One Day Cup. The tournament opener was full of runs as Titans posted 340 for 6, built on hundreds from
Theunis de Bruyn and
Farhaan Behardien.
Opening the chase, van Wyk paced his innings well and helped Dolphins keep up with the required run rate. The 109-run stand for the third wicket between van Wyk and van Jaarsveld began slowly but the pair found the big overs in between to release the pressure. They were also helped along by Titans bowlers, who gave away 22 wides in the innings. Van Jaarsveld fell for 62 before van Wyk and Khaya Zondo, who chipped in with 32 off 18, staged the final assault. The pair accumulated 56 runs in 4.5 overs to help Dolphins pull ahead. They needed 27 off the last three overs but a 19-run over from Marchant de Lange reduced the equation to just eight off 12 balls, which they achieved with ease. Van Wyk's 21st List A hundred had 14 fours and two sixes as he finished on 121 off 112 deliveries.
Earlier, de Bruyn and Behardien had propped up the Titans innings. Henry Davids, the Titans captain, had fallen in the second over before de Bruyn led the rebuilding effort, sharing big stands with Heino Kuhn and Dean Elgar. De Bruyn's maiden hundred came off 85 balls but the side stuttered a little in the middle overs with the loss of a few quick wickets. Behardien and wicketkeeper Mangaliso Mosehle then provided a late lift with a 143-run, sixth-wicket stand that came in 15.3 overs. Behardien's fifty had come in 43 balls but he stepped up and scored the next fifty in 21 to notch up a hundred in 64 deliveries. Three of his four sixes came in the penultimate over, as Titans piled up 70 runs off the last five overs.
