Leus du Plooy had already built a substantial body of work in South African domestic cricket - nine first-class hundred and an average of 48.08 - when he arrived at Derbyshire ahead of the 2019 season. Possessing a Hungarian passport, du Plooy was able to register as a non-overseas player and quickly established himself as one of Derbyshire's most-reliable batters across formats.

In his first summer in England, du Plooy averaged 39.57 in the Championship and also helped Derbyshire to reach Blast Finals Day for the first time in their history. He was also drafted by Welsh Fire in the Hundred, becoming one of the few players to enhance their reputation as the club struggled through two editions of the competition. When Billy Godleman stepped down as Derbyshire captain 2022, du Plooy was named as his replacement, and he demonstrated his rising T20 stock by topping the averages for Joburg Super Kings in the SA20 and subsequently winning a £125,000 contract with Southern Brave in the Hundred draft.
